Purpose of the role:

As we expand, we are seeking a highly skilled Customs Compliance Specialist to ensure that our import and export operations continue to meet all regulatory requirements and international trade laws.

Overview:

Based in our finance office in Manchester, the Customs Compliance Specialist will be responsible for overseeing customs compliance, providing support to the business and maintaining strong working relationships with our customs agents. This role is critical to ensuring that all imports and exports are conducted in full compliance with international trade regulations, tariffs and customs laws. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in customs regulations and possess the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance - Ensure all import and export activities comply with relevant customs laws, regulations and international trade agreements. Take ownership of all necessary HMRC approvals relating to customs duties.

Documentation Management - Obtain and review all necessary documentation relating to customs clearance, including bills of lading, certificates of origin and other required documents. Conduct reviews of all import/export declarations made by external customs agents.

Tariff Classification - Accurately classify goods according to the UK Trade Tariff and EU CN Codes to determine applicable duties and taxes. Supervise and reconcile the company's import duty deferment account.

Internal Audits - Conduct regular internal audits to assess compliance with customs regulations and identify potential risks or areas for improvement.

Risk Mitigation - Develop and implement strategies to minimise compliance risks, including the assessment of potential penalties and fines.

Stakeholder Communication - Liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, government agencies and internal departments to ensure smooth customs clearance processes.

Training & Development - Provide training and guidance to internal teams on customs compliance procedures and regulatory updates.

Continuous Improvement - Stay updated on changes in customs regulations and industry best practices to ensure the company's compliance strategy and internal regulation remains effective and up to date.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in customs compliance or similar role - preferably within the oil industry.

In-depth understanding of customs regulations, the UK Trade Tariff, CN codes, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and other relevant trade compliance frameworks.

Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with various stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.

Bachelor's degree in business, finance or a related field.

Proficiency in MS Excel.
