Position Summary Information

Position Summary

The Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of NCAA compliance for the institution's athletic department. This role ensures that the athletic programs, coaches, staff, and student-athletes comply with NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement:
  • Develop, implement, and oversee compliance monitoring systems.
  • Monitor recruiting activities, financial aid, eligibility, and playing/practice seasons.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure adherence to NCAA regulations.
Education and Training:
  • Develop and direct a comprehensive program for educating, monitoring, reporting, and complying with all NCAA, Atlantic Sun (ASUN) conference, and University rules and regulations.
  • Educate coaches, student-athletes, and athletic department staff on NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions and educational materials.
  • Stay updated on changes to NCAA rules and communicate these changes to relevant stakeholders.
Reporting and Documentation:
  • Prepare and submit required NCAA and conference reports.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of compliance activities and investigations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of all compliance-related matters.
Advisory Role:
  • Serve as the primary advisor on compliance-related matters to the Athletic Director and other senior administrators.
  • Provide guidance on compliance issues and develop strategies to address potential problems.
  • Act as liaison with the NCAA, ASUN Conference, Financial Aid, and Registrar's offices for compliance and scholarship issues.
  • Interpret or secure interpretations for compliance with NCAA and ASUN rules and procedures.
Investigations and Violations:
  • Investigate and report any potential violations of NCAA rules.
  • Work with the NCAA and conference offices on investigations and reports.
  • Develop corrective actions and compliance plans to address and prevent future violations.
Policy Development:
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with NCAA regulations.
  • Review and update institutional compliance policies as necessary.
Software and Systems Management:
  • Serve as Manager of NCAA Compliance Software, departmental compliance software, and NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse.
  • Work closely with the faculty representative in the certification of eligibility and rules compliance issues.
Recruiting and Financial Aid Oversight:
  • Administer and oversee recruiting activities, Athletics Grants-in-Aid programs, eligibility certification for practice and competition, financial aid, NCAA squad lists, National Letters of Intent, and reporting of the same.
  • Develop and produce educational materials, such as departmental and student-athlete compliance handbooks, and the annual NCAA rules brochure for alumni, boosters, and the general public.
Waivers and Appeals:
  • Compile, review, and submit requests for eligibility waivers and other requests for waivers and appeals related to NCAA rules.
  • Attend the annual NCAA Compliance seminar and provide continuous updates for compliance with rules and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth understanding of NCAA regulations and compliance issues
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in compliance software and database management.
Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in NCAA compliance or a related field.
  • The position may require evening and weekend hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required for conferences and meetings.
