We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Compliance Manager to join our dynamic team.

The post is based in Birmingham City University's Compliance Team which is part of the University's Secretary Department.

The Compliance Manager will support the Head of Compliance to implement, maintain and further improve the University's Project Management Processes and Tools thereby ensuring that projects are being delivered within a compliant framework with all monitoring and controls in place. The role will suit a detail-focused person with extensive project management experience and analytical skills providing quality assurance support to a wide range of externally funded projects.

This role will involve providing support to project teams across the faculties and department with regards to providing advice & guidance in relation to compliance for externally funded projects. In addition, the role will also deputise the Head of Compliance as required including assessment of practices and processes and provide recommendations for improvement to systems and processes. A more detailed list of activities and responsibilities associated with the role includes:
  • Manage relationships and chair meetings with and without project lead with partner Universities and organisations; developing effective working relationships with those responsible for project delivery and finance staff.
  • Provide account management support to key faculty stakeholders ensuring that agreed levels of service are delivered and meet expectations.
  • Undertake project assurance and support activities for various funding streams working groups including risk and issue logs and action lists.
  • Setting up the systems and evidence trails to outline a project including design and maintenance of Power Apps based Project Notification Form and associated applications.
  • Working in close partnership with Research Innovation Gateway/Finance/Contracts Teams to monitor project plans and deliverables and ensure projects are following University Policy and Procedures.
  • To provide expert advice to Project Delivery Teams with regards to University and relevant funding organisations' policies and procedures.
  • Report writing: partners' meeting reports, technical and financial interim reports, project outcome reports. Compile and analyse the data for these reports.
  • To advise and inform the Head of Compliance and Academic Leads on the management of resources within budget and project schedule.

Responsibilities to include:
  • Providing project support for complex projects funded by EU, NIHR, NHS, UKRI, Innovate UK, WM Combined Authority, Other UK Government Funds and Private Funders.
  • Providing advice and guidance to internal / external colleagues, academics and Senior Management with regards to externally funded projects and compliance requirements.
  • Running financial systems / monitoring / administering project records (either financial or non-financial). Good numeracy skills and understanding of budgets, particularly on large collaborative projects, with payment in foreign currency also.
  • Monitoring of project plans and liaising with Project Managers/Leads.
  • Organise and delegate work within project set up, co-coordinating activity, ensuring consistency with master plan, engendering a sense of common purpose for the whole project.
  • Undertake project assurance and support activities for various funding stream working groups including risk and issue logs and action lists.
  • Provide expert advice to Project Delivery Teams with regards to University and relevant funding organisations' policies and procedures and application submission procedures.
Education: Applicants should possess at least one Degree.

Note that applications are particularly welcome from those who have experience of supporting externally funded projects in a higher education setting, although this is not an essential requirement if candidates can demonstrate relevant experience that meets the criteria set out in the Job Description.
