Environmental Compliance Specialist (HSSE) [NEW]

As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

As part of this investment we are seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist (HSSE) who will support compliance with all relevant environmental compliance obligations, including environmental standards and legislation, Annual Business Plan (ABP) environmental commitments and the maintenance and development of the ISO 14001 & 50001 integrated Environment and Energy Management System (EEnMS).

Accountabilities (See attached JD for full responsibilities)
  • Maintain, develop and improve the integrated Environment and Energy Management System (EEnMS) in line with ISO14001:2015 and ISO5001:2018 ensuring the Procedures, Policies and Requirements of the system are communicated effectively across the business and continual improvement is maintained
  • Develop or update necessary standards and procedures to ensure environmental compliance across all aspects of environmental management such as water, air quality, Noise, waste
  • Review existing and upcoming relevant legislation and other requirements and ensure that the business has appropriate systems, policies and practices in place so that WMT remain compliant from a legal, internal and external audit perspective
  • Support the planning and delivery of the environmental internal audit programme to assess the effectiveness of the EEnMS and ensure that there is an effective mechanism for raising non-conformances and closing out outstanding actions which is also communicated widely
  • Work with the Property team to ensure water discharges to ground, surface water and effluent treatment plants are within environmental permits and trade effluent consents. investigate issues and develop action plans to ensure compliance where required
  • Liaise with Local Authorities, Environment Agency, other Statutory Bodies and residents when necessary
  • Ensuring environmental performance data is collated, reviewed and reported periodically as per reporting requirements
  • Attend environmental events both in the rail industry and outside of the industry to maintain knowledge of best practice
  • Engage with team members in West Midlands Trains and the Safety and Environment team to develop data and reporting solutions
  • Support the development of on train systems and tools to promote operational safety management in conjunction with Operational Colleagues
  • Develop skills, experience and qualifications through Learning and Development and knowledge building with other West Midlands Trains departments as well as other Train Operating Companies and the Transport UK Group
Knowledge and experience you will bring:
  • A Degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability or similar
  • Member of IEMA or other equivalent environmental professional body (or working towards)
  • Excellent understanding of ISO14001 and ISO50001 Environmental and Energy management systems including experience in internal and 3rd party environmental compliance auditing
  • EMS Internal auditor to ISO14001 and 50001
  • Experience in managing environmental compliance projects, including development, pilot, implementation and transition to BAU (business as usual)
  • Understanding of relevant legislative requirements
  • Deep understanding of environmental compliance in a complex business setting
  • Knowledge of the business environment in which West Midlands Trains operates
  • Experience with engaging with regulators and other stakeholder in relation to ensuring environmental compliance for our operations
  • Excellent Excel skills and other analytical software with a rigorous approach and attention to detail in both quantitative and qualitative research and analysis
  • Excellent software development and information system skills
  • Excellent organisational skills with an ability to meet deadlines, while working in a flexible and collaborative way
  • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-changing environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to take on challenges outside of your comfort zone
  • Good inter-personal skills, with an ability to develop relationships and influence stakeholders
